INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATED WITH GREAT FERVOUR:
Independence Day 2002 was celebrated with great fervour in Sonitpur
district. Shri Pankaj Bora, Minister of Education, Assam, hoisted the
national Flag and took the salute at the central function held at Nehru Maidan
at Tezpur. Shri Bora in his speech urged upon various militant groups to shun
violence and come forward for talks with the government. About ten thousand
people attended the main function which was marked by a fly-past by an Indian
Air Force helicopter and a colourful cultural programme.

The Chief Guest later felicitated students from Sonitpur district who
secured ranks at HSLC and Higher Secondary examinations during the year. Gana
Chetana Samaj, an NGO, was awarded commendation certificate for promoting
concept of Self Help Groups among rural poor and tribal masses. Computerised
copies of Jamabandi were also formally distributed to people.
Shri Nurjamal Sarkar, Minister of Flood Control, was the Chief Guest at a
well-attended Independence function at Biswanath while Shri Ripun Bora,
Minister of State for Panchayat and Rural Development hoisted the National
Flag ceremonially at Gohpur.

DISTRICT DISABILITY REHABILITATION CENTRE INAUGURATED:
The District Disability Rehabilitation Centre ( DDRC) Tezpur, an extension
wing of the National Institute of the Orthopaedically Handicapped (NIOH)
Kolkata, was formally inaugurated on 15.8.02
| by Education Minister Shri
Pankaj Bora. Shri Bora lauded the District Administration, participating
NGO Bharat Vikas Parishad and NIOH authorities for taking keen interest in
the affairs of the disabled and expressed hope that the Centre would be able to provide all assistance to the needy.
Wheelchairs, tricycles, and other aids were distributed to
orthopaedically disabled persons by the Minister on the occasion.The
Centre, the only one of its kind in the North Bank, is adequately
equipped with trained personnel and aid tools. |

WAITING SHED FOR OUT PATIENTS CONSTRUCTED AT CIVIL HOSPITAL, TEZPUR:
A waiting shed for outdoor patients fitted with fifty modular fixed-type
chairs was inaugurated at the Kanaklata Civil Hospital premises by Deputy
Commissioner Shri Sanjay Lohiya on 14.8.2002. The shed built by local
businessman, M M Singh, is provided with ceiling fans and a reception counter
and will protect outdoor patients from sun and rain at time of registration.
The Management Committee of Kanaklata Civil Hospital has also recommissioned
the defunct Generating Set of the Hospital with funds collected from outdoor
and indoor patients, thereby fulfilling a long-standing demand of patients and
citizens of Tezpur. The recommissioned generating set was formally
pressed into operation by Shri Pradeep Kumar, DIG of Police, Northern Range,
on 14.8.2002. The30 KVA generator will provide standby power for water
pump, operation theatre and all wards of the Hospital.

PROJECT " ROSHNI "
GENERATES TREMENDOUS RESPONSE:
Project" Roshni", conceived by the North Assam Chamber of Commerce
and Industry ( NACCI), has generated tremendous response in Tezpur town. Under
this project, NACCI, with assistance from the District Administration,
provides street lights using Compact Fluorescent Lamps to individuals and
organisations at highly subsidised rates. Each light with wall bracket costs eight
hundred rupees while lights affixed on poles cost fifteen hundred rupees.
These lights are affixed on perimeter walls of premises of individuals and
offices opening out on streets thereby serving to light up the streets
besides functioning as exterior lights for the household/ office. More
than 200 such street lights have so far been installed by NACCI in Tezpur
town.
MINISTER ATTENDS CEREMONIAL ADMISSON FUNCTION FOR BRIDGE COURSE LEARNERS :
Minister of Education, Shri Pankaj Bora, attended a function organized by DPEP Sonitpur at Kamarbasti L P School under Balipara Development Block on 16.08.2002 to formally admit Bridge Course learners into the mainstream school course. Out of 32 Bridge Course learners , 24 were admitted into Kamarbasti L P School. The Minister also handed over one thousand rupees as honorarium to the concerned Academic Coordinator on the occasion.
In Sonitpur district, a total of 3050 Bridge Course learners out of 3083
were admitted in respective formal schools at ceremonial functions organized
at various places on 16.08.2002.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION CENTRES ( CICs) INAUGURATED :
Out of fourteen Community Information Centres ( CICs) in
Sonitpur district eleven were formally inaugurated on 17.08.2002 and one on
22.08.2002. These were inaugurated by important functionaries including
Ministers, MLAs , Zila Parishad President, Abchalik Panchyat President
etc. The twelve centres are fully
operational .Besides regular services like Internet browsing and printing,
the CICs are offering a one month course on Computer Awareness.

For the smooth functioning of CICs , decisions
relating to fixing of user rates, among others, were taken at the district level committee meeting held on
7/7/02 under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur.
The rates fixed for various services are as follows :
